My reflection

My Reflection

This year is probably the best last year I could have. I’ve had lots of fun, learned new things, discovered and made friends. It’s sad to think that I’ll be leaving next year. This year I feel proud of my maths. I’ve never really loved it, and I guess that’s because I’ve never really been brilliant at it. But this year I felt much more confident in doing it and that’s helped me improved. I now realise that you have no limits in maths and you don’t have to be good at it to love it. This year my smiling speech and me also managed to get 1st in the school competition and get a Highly commended in South Cluster. The most fun I have had is definitely camp and fireworks but I also enjoyed our more recent event of Cleaning the estuary because I have always been passionate for the environment. Looking back on all the fun things we’ve done It’s hard to pick. I love saint Mary's, and I will always remember all the fun and great times I’ve had.

Austins butterfly blogger reflection

Austin's Butterfly Reflection

I watched this video with Claire. It was about a young first grade boy called Austin who was supposed to draw the above, a western tiger swallowtail butterfly for a card. It was going to be printed so it had to be good. But instead of copying the picture, he just drew the icon of a butterfly in his mind. It looked like this.

He was really upset when it didn't look like a Western tiger swallow tail. So he asked his friends, and they gave him feedback. By reflecting on his learning, Austin managed to get from that to this

What this clearly shows is that When you work in groups, give positive feedback, and DON'T GIVE UP, you can do anything.

I really enjoyed this task, it was fun to see what can happen when you work together. I can't wait for my next one!

Art Gallery and Tauranga Library reflection

Tauranga Library

First Tahi 8 went to the Tauranga City library. I love books and personally it was a great experience. We were focusing on poems and we did a really fun activity which was when we had to find words  in an old page of a book and black out all the other words to make a poem. For me, it was really interesting to see how different everyone's ideas and and poems were. Mine went like this:
"The world is like Christmas every day. But instead we have Friends."

To me, This meant that we should treat everyday with joy as thought it were Christmas. But instead of getting presents, we get time with friends. Friends are what make every day like Christmas.

Art Gallery

The second place we went to was the art gallery. it was really cool to see all the different types of art and all the different styles. One of the artist who we were really focusing on was Bob. He did his art with mirrors and Neon tubes. He was really inspired by Maori styles and culture.

We did some art and it was really fun. My Maori word word I chose was Tui.

Overall, I think that It was a BRILLIANT day and very fun. I can't wait for our next one!

STEM learning reflection

STEM Learning Reflection
This week we had a competition with something called STEM which stood for

  1. S Science
  2. T Technology
  3. E Engineering
  4. M Maths
Our task was to try and build the tallest tower and balance a ball at the top for 2 minutes using only 25 straws, pipe cleaners and paperclips. My team was Erin, Sara and Ferlyn.

Here was our plan

We had a tough competition. In the end, we won by 2 centimetres.
Here is the finished result.

I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to do another STEM project!

RE writing reflection

RE writing Reflection

This week we had to do a piece of writing retelling the last supper. I quite enjoyed doing it and I feel glad about managing to finish it.

In my conclusion, I fitted in these two questions:
  • How do you think receiving the body of Christ makes you stronger?
  • Why do you think the priest re-enacts the last supper at every mass?
I am very pleased with what I did and I have learnt a lot about the last supper. One thing thing I will remember about this is how I must do a new line for every person speaking.

I used to not do paragraphs but I now succeeded.

This is a photo of my writing

Bike safety report

Bike safety report
This week we had some very special people come into our school. They were part of a program meant to teach us about how to ride on the road safely.  Today, they taught us about "T" intersections and how to know when to cross the road
Pretend this happened:

This is called a "T" intersection. It is called this because It looks like a "T". Sometimes, when you are in the car, you will come across some "T" intersections. These are some of the key rules they gave us
  • Top of the "T" goes before me
  • Give way to all traffic on your right
  • anyone going straight goes first
  • short turn first, long turn last
GOLDEN RULE:
Wait and see

The biker, trying to go to the right hand side, would wait last. Top of the "T" goes before me! If you were the biker, you would have to hand signal with your right hand. To make sure the driver see's you, you would smile at them and make eye contact. If they smile back, you know they've seen you. If they don't and your not sure what to do, use the key rule and wait and see
I  have really enjoyed this program and can't wait to go on the road tomorrow!

writing

My Writing reflection

This week during our literacy we focused on learning how to do a narrative.

A narrative is a type of writing meant to entertain the audience and is non-fiction. It can be used for chapter books and is made up.
I used to just write without planning or organising my ideas into paragraphs. But now I know about an introduction which can also be called the orientation. This sets the scene and introduces the characters. The middle of the story is when the problem happens and the characters have to face challenges. Their are lots of twists and turns. This is the body to the story. The conclusion is probably the hardest to write because it has to reflect on the book. It generally has a resolution to the problem. Usually the story ends well. The main character normally is alright and the story turns out good.

I have learnt a lot this week!

week reflection

Reflection
This week during work I started doing my report on pumas. Unfortunately, I had sprained  my thumb so I had to do it on my chrome book. I thought personally it was quite good and I was very proud of it. I worked hard to complete my goal during that. My narrative was very long with no paragraphs.. (whoops!) about a alien who became friends with a girl.

My maths was good and I enjoy doing mental maths now. The prototec maths was good and I see what I need to work on.

My daily reading is still good and I still enjoy reading. I am starting to becume better at my reading goal.

Maths success

Maths Success
This Week so far for My maths hub I have been practicing how to round decimal numbers to a nearest tenth or whole number. When I thought I was good enough at that went on to rounding any numbers. At first I didn't get it but when I re-read the Question I understood it perfectly and I managed to complete the word sentence. Here is what I did.

An example of what I was doing is: Say you have the number 2.7 and you want to round it to the nearest tenth, you would round it up because .7 is closer to 3 rather than 2. If you had 2.3 you would round it down because .3 is closer to 2 rather than 3. I didn't get to finish the other questions because we had to go to liturgy but I will finish it as soon as possible.

my blog reflection

My Blogger reflection

My reading goal this term is to evaluate and integrate ideas across a small range of texts. This week, I have been focusing  on that specifically. I personally  think I can already do that with some books, but not all. Next week I hope to improve further

My maths goal this term is to use multiplication facts to solve problems instead of repeated addition, e.g; 9+9+9+9 as 4x9. I prefer to add instead of times, and I think half of that is because I don't know all my times tables, but I will try to do it

My writing goal this term is to understand the purpose I am writing for and identify the writing processes that are appropriate for that purpose. I sometimes find that a bit tricky. This week, I didn't do it but will do it next week.

want a cockroach named after you? Kiwi Kids News Report

Want A Cockroach Named After You

In Bronx zoo, USA, is now letting people name a Madagascar hissing cockroach. They are named because they hiss  by exhaling (means breath out) air through breathing holes which is a different and unique thing for an insect. In Bronx zoo, they say that by naming a cockroach it honour's someone for valentines day.

A zoo in New York, 2011, started a name-you're-own-roach-system as a fun way to fun raise. For $13.70, the person you named the cockroach for gets e-mailed a certificate saying a Madagascar hissing cockroach has been named for them.

They also added something else. Instead of having just a roach, you can also get a Madagascar hissing cockroach plush toy and chocolates.

All the money goes to the wildlife conversation society.
